Rhys Wynne’s email capture plugin is incredibly useful for anyone running a wordpress blog who is also looking to build their list from the traffic their blogging generates. The question is:

Q: How do I insert the Spam Free seal into a form generated by the WP Email Capture plugin?

We’re working on a fancy way to add an option to the WP Email Capture options menu, but in the meantime here is a quick way to do so, assuming you have already installed and are using the plugin on your blog.

STEP 1
In your Spam Free account, create the code for the site & size of seal you need.

STEP 2
Access the plugin editor from within your wordpress admin dashboard by:

Clicking “Editor” under the lefthand plugins menu

Choosing “WP Email Capture” and hitting “Select” in the upper right hand corner.

And finally clicking “wp-email-capture/inc/display.php” in the list of files that appears on the right side of the editing area.

STEP 3
Paste the code from STEP 1 into two places in the “wp-email-capture/inc/display.php” file:

First, between the /FORM tag and the /DIV on line 30.

And second, insert first a BR tag and then the seal code between the end of the SUBMIT tag and the /FORM tag on line 65 (line 67 after making the first edit).

Click save and it the seal should now show up below the submit button on your forms: both in widget forms and page embedded forms.

The Spam Free seal increases your optin rate, you’ve heard that before, but what else can you do to nudge that email address capture rate up a notch or two?

The Spam Free seal increases your optin rate, you’ve heard that before, but what else can you do to nudge that email address capture rate up a notch or two?

1) Give Value
To potential subscribers to your list, their email address is one of the most valuable digital things they own. If you want them to hand that over, you’re going to have to provide something of real, obvious value. Just saying you offer “tips” or a “newsletter” is not enough. Give them something that they actually need and can use right then.

2) Be Honest
Tell them up front how often you will content them, what you’ll be emailing about, and how easy it is to unsubscribe. The more clear and honest you are, the less anxiety they will have about signing up.

3) Make it THE Option
One of the biggest mistakes a landing page can make is to give the visitor too many options. If the most valuable thing a visitor can do is to subscribe to your email list, make it the focus of your page with colors, layout, a popover, etc so that they know the best thing they can do before they leave is join your list.

What does this mean? There will no longer be free accounts. We’ve kept it free as long as possible but to really be able to test, improve, and make the seal and system as effective as possible we feel like this will be the best move for everyone.

Luckily, because the seal boosts opt-in rates (and thus, revenues) by so much, the ROI on the membership fee will be around 1000% for most folks

If you are anything like us, coming up with the time to write a new blog post can be tricky, so here are some ready-made resources you can use.

Email marketing is a tricky thing, especially when it comes to trust. Opt-in rates continue to drop because of the fear of spam. Most marketers will just try to claim their list is free from spam by saying something like, “We hate spam as much as you do and will never share or spam your email address.”

There is, however, a solution. A way to actually prove your list has a clean track record when it comes to spam called the Spam Free Seal. Basically it’s a seal that you place on your site below your opt in form that links to a status page with instant proof you don’t send any spam to your list. Pretty cool.

I just ran across it today and thought I’d share, here’s a link.
